Do you ever stop to consider what your bag communicates to the world? I’m not talking about the next top brand, or the hottest new trend, I’m talking about your basic style. Are you a crossover kind of dude, or tote kind of girl?
I have been through so many styles of bags for the various chapters in my life. As a teenager I started with a cross-body, I didn’t want to deal with a purse that could not hold its own as I never like to feel slowed down on any adventures.
As I reached college and entered into the realm of great literature and avid journaling only a satchel would do. I was too busy, too enlightened by the great works of Plath, Ginsberg, and Steinbeck to ever leave home without their words nearby for any quick reference I could offer in our scholarly conversations over the small round coffee shop tables.
Back sore from the heavy loads of publications I scaled back through my retail career, choosing only to utilize my rear pockets to hold essential tools, cash, and my cell phone.
But as I had kids, I found women’s pockets would never suffice to carry the necessary diapers, wipes, formula, and the large amount of supplies that come with this new incredible chapter of life. Today, I’m a tote carrying mom, I have stranger gadgets in my purse than Poppins, and the dig for anything truly necessary is a nightmare.
I wonder now, through these phases if others perceived me with these bags as I perceived myself?

It’s funny you should write about this topic. Yesterday I spent a bit of time clearing out one of my bags. Because I commute on the train, I tend to carry everything I could possibly need in either a tote or a cross body. What I couldn’t believe is the amount of Starbucks and Whole Foods paper napkins I had! Hoarding is real 🙂

Hi Jess! OOH I’m a cross body kind of girl so that means I’m adventurous! Enjoyed your post and really my handbag in a word is a ‘mess’ LOL:) Its a little like Mary Poppins’ bag you just keep pulling more stuff out and just when you think it is empty out comes a hat stand LOL:)

I love this idea that your choice of bag says soemthing about you. If I’m honest, I rarely use bags. I usually try and carry the minimum with me (debit card, keys, phone), stuff them into my pockets and sling my camera over my shoulder… not quite sure what that syas about me – practical or lazy? 😉

Haha, when I don’t have the tots I’m right there with you. I don’t want to confess the amount of phones I’ve lost to the watery toilet grave.

When I was working, I carried first a briefcase, then a laptop case, and for the longest time I wore a fanny pack to carry my wallet and PDA around in. Don’t know what that says…

I always wonder about people who carry a small crossbody all of the time. I like to be prepared, and a purse that barely fits my phone and coin purse doesn’t allow for that- do those people just not have things when they need them??
