A Week With The South Plains Mall in Pictures

Discover the dish on South Plains Mall of Lubbock TX through a week on my Instagram feed.  Every week this Shopgirl features a new mall on her Instagram feed, one photo a day.  Below is what you missed on Instagram this week:

The New Feel:

Many malls seem to be going for the minimalist meets modern feel. While exciting in Cool Springs Galleria, I’m not sure if it’s the right fit for every mall. What do you think of the new direction for the malls across the US?

The Magnitude:

South Plains mall, built in 1972 and expanded in 1998 reaching over one million square feet of retail space.   The mall, built in sections, sits like a labyrinth, something a mall rat like myself enjoys, that sensation of an adventure, and the seven massive corridors holds 7 major anchors:

  • Dillards
  • JC Penney
  • Sears
  • Barnes & Nobles (Two story)
  • Bealls
  • Premier Cinema

Shopgirl’s Favorite Spot:

What more is there to say?  This place is the best.

The Local Flavor

There is an incredible amount of local flavor to be enjoyed along side the major retail players.  More on the local shops here.

Retail Trivia

Bankruptcy in business is not a new occasion, and malls have survived, nay flourished, as a result to trimming some of the dead weight.

My Farewell or TTFN

Until next time old friend.

Shop Talk: Shopgirl want’s to know:

  • Whats your favorite local flavor at your favorite mall?
  • What do you think of the new modern mall designs?
  • What did your mall do with that pesky Mervyn’s vacancy in the early 2000’s?

Hey Shopgirl, I’ve been in Japan for two years and am from Houston. Nice to see English in malls. Your photos were awesome with great detail and nonetheless in a few words. Sign of a great writer. Thanks for sharing.

I haven’t been to Lubbock since the mid-eighties so if I’ve been to this mall it’s been a long time ago. The mall name sounds familiar to me. From the photos it looks very nice. I like the bright clean look of the corridors and the individualistic styles of the businesses within. It appears inviting.
